Why all batteries of UAVs use polymer lithium batteries

In the battery development history of UAV, NiMH battery, steel cylindrical lithium-ion battery, lithium iron phosphate battery (steel shell, aluminum shell or soft package) and other types of batteries have been used. But at present, lithium polymer batteries are mainly used as the main power for the batteries of consumer UAVs on the market. Since the UAV needs to reduce the takeoff weight as much as possible, it cannot carry heavy and large capacity batteries, so the requirements for the performance, safety and energy density of the batteries of the UAV are increasingly demanding.
What are the advantages of using polymer lithium battery as the battery of UAV?
1. Flexible size
The polymer lithium battery does not stick to the conventional size, but can flexibly design the length, width and thickness, and even make the irregular shape. The thickness of ordinary liquid lithium ion battery is difficult to be less than 3.6mm due to the method of customizing the shell first and then plugging the positive and negative electrode materials. The polymer core does not have this problem, and the thickness can be less than 1mm. Therefore, as the battery of UAV, polymer lithium battery can not only make UAV manufacturers more flexible in product modeling and structural design, but also maximize product performance and make full use of the valuable battery space of UAV.
2. Good discharge performance
Polymer lithium battery uses colloidal electrolyte, which has more stable discharge characteristics and higher discharge platform than liquid electrolyte. Therefore, as the battery of UAV, the unit energy density of polymer lithium battery is also about 20% higher than other general lithium ion batteries, and its capacity has advantages.
3. The internal resistance is relatively small
As the polymer lithium battery core uses colloidal electrolyte, the internal resistance is smaller than that of the liquid battery core. The reduction of internal resistance means that the self consumption of the battery is reduced, which can extend the battery standby time and output higher performance. At present, the internal resistance level of Shibao UAV lithium polymer battery has reached the leading level in the industry.
4. It won't explode
The polymer lithium battery is made of aluminum plastic flexible packaging (which belongs to flexible packaging battery). In case of potential safety hazard, the battery of the UAV will only bulge at most, but the liquid battery cell with metal shell may explode. Therefore, the polymer lithium battery is safer as the battery of the UAV.
5. Light structure
The polymer lithium battery uses gel electrolyte, eliminating the metal shell and simplifying the packaging. As the battery of UAV, polymer lithium battery is lighter than the battery with the same capacity and specification.
